A voluntary flying organization based at the University of Dayton has been registered as a foreign aid organization by the State department. Rep. Charles W. Whalen Jr. (R-Dayton) announced today.

The action will give United Missions Air Training and Transport, Inc., a broader exposure to philanthropic foundations able to lend financial support, and organization spokesman said.

Called UMATT, the organization airlifts medical aid and food and provides other emergency assistance in underdeveloped African nations.

Its founder and president is Mike Stimac, 44, of Dayton. A Cleveland native and former Ohio teacher, he was graduated from UD and Ohio State university.

UMATT has nine single-engine aircraft flown by volunteers, mostly Americans, and is sponsored by UD and the Marianists.

Whalen said the International Development agencies’ advisory committee on voluntary foreign aid ruled UMATT eligible for registration.
